Locations - Fit for the Future – Successful Investment Programme at Zwettl

The Zwettl Private Brewery, officially known as Zwettl Karl Schwarz GmbH, is a family-run business in its fifth generation with an annual output of 193,000 hectoliters, which includes both its own products and trade goods. The brewery holds a market share of about 2.3% in Austria.

Since 2010, the owner-managed brewery has invested approximately 15 million Euros in expanding and modernizing its site. The most significant project was an upgrade of the brewery’s core operations, including the renewal and expansion of its bottling and filtration systems, and investments in the filling facility, boiler house, and pressure tank cellar.

By the end of 2013, construction was completed, and all systems were fully operational. These investments also provided the brewery with a modern logistics center, an updated fleet of forklifts and trucks, and advanced IT systems to control processes.

Challenge - Warehouse capacity expansion & production space optimization

The logistical capacities and processes of the old brewery building had reached their limits. The company’s strategy was to focus on technical modernization (including a new KEG filling system), to broaden the product  range, and this growth, demanded additional production space.

Solution - Concept development, dimensioning, structuring

Together with Schulte Berater + Planer, a new logistics center concept was developed and implemented. Key steps included:

  • Concept Development: Utilizing the existing property while integrating it into the brewery’s operations
  • Process Structuring: Future processes were structured in advance and documented through process mapping, forming the basis for configuring the warehouse management system
  • Functional Space Dimensioning: Based on current goods flows and future growth scenarios, various storage options (e.g., longitudinal vs. transverse storage, pallet racks, flow racks) were evaluated. After consulting with architects, the final warehouse design was created

Result - With the construction of the new logistics center, Zwettl Brewery has achieved

  • greater efficiency in its processes and flexibility in responding to customer demands
  • improved ability to adapt to future market demands
  • a well-designed, architecturally appealing warehouse that meets operational needs
