Technology - Hydrogen Drive in Practice
The focus of this joint project is the use of a hydrogen-powered truck, which will soon take over the transport of containers with raw materials for the final segment of hinterland transport. The containers first arrive at the deep-sea ports of Hamburg and Rotterdam, travel by water and rail to the region, are transshipped at suitable terminals, and then transported completely emission-free to the production site in Ascheberg.

Challenge - Go with the Flow - or Dare to Innovate
For the "last mile," a suitable, emission-free solution had to be found. It would have been easy to follow the current strong trend for electric trucks. However, during the project, it quickly became clear that this use case offered the potential to think one step further.
Our Solution - Cooperation and Repositioning
Thanks to Schulte Berater + Planer's existing connection with a Swiss retail company experienced in using alternative drive technologies, attention quickly turned to the fuel cell. The conditions were ideal for implementing such a pilot project in Germany. With the initiative of Midsona, a long-term logistics provider of the company was brought on board as a partner. Schulte Berater + Planer’s market research introduced Hylane from Cologne, which provided a suitable semi-truck.
- The vehicle, with a range of over 400 kilometers (at maximum payload), is ideal for the defined transport routes
- This means that the “last mile” can now be completed without fossil fuels—without any complicated changes in handling the technology
- Key products were repositioned in close proximity to production and loading facilities
Our Result - Starting in early 2023, Midsona is now able to
- make a large portion of its inbound logistics road transport emission-free
- become a pioneer in hydrogen-powered heavy-duty transport in Germany
for the environment, this means a CO2 reduction of approximately 150–200 tons per year
This example demonstrates that with the right partners, even innovative projects can be successfully implemented. Additional use cases, such as in distribution transport in retail and the beverage industry, have already been realized or offer significant potential for the future
